I'm 16 and am about to have a baby. I work a minimum wage job with about 15 other people who are just barely making it. My boss told me that me being pregnant was making him look bad and that I need to quit. I did. So did everyone else working there.

Did you know it is against the law to fire someone or make someone quit because they are pregnant?

Yeah, what he did by forcing you to quit is illegal. You need to report him.

This is amazing. I hope you post back in this comment section to let us know how things work out (Did you get your job back? Did the others? Are you going to report him or have you? And of course, baby news.) :)

It's not that you make him look bad, he just doesn't want to pay you while you're on maternity leave. I can think of several unpostable expletives to describe him!

It doesn't say GMH at the end, but it wouldn't be as powerful if it did. The post wouldn't have the same awesome effect that it does when you read, "So did everyone else working there." I completely ADORED that ending.

It was really brave and selfless of your co-workers, your boss had no right to ask you to quit. But personally, I would feel so very bad about these people, because they all were forced to quit because of me.

@ #10: Why would you think that they were forced? She didn't go to all of them and say 'I'm quitting so the rest of you need to quit' -- they did it because they cared for her and wanted to make a statement to a boss who broke the law by using pregnancy as a reason for terminating an employee. It's absolutely wonderful that they were that close.

She wasn't forced to leave just because she was pregnant, but because she was a pregnant teen. Wow, that's pretty powerful of a story...

Actually, she wouldn't be able to sue. In a most retail/fast food places in the US, the company can fire you without any reason at all (forcing her to quit is basically firing her). I hope everything works out well for you though! And good luck with your baby.

#11 morally forced. It's not easy to find a job these days and I would feel responsible that all these people just lost their job because they wanted to show solidarity with me. That boss will find new employees, but will his former employees find new jobs? I would have told my co-workers that I appreciate their solidarity, but their jobs, their families are more important than me. Teen pregnancy is a controversial issue and I don't know how her boss would have reacted if she was 10 years older. No woman should lose her job because she wishes to start a family. But lets face it: becoming pregnant at the age of 16, before high school/college is completed, makes life considerably harder.

#16: Believe me nobody forced her coworkers to quit. I'm sure they weighed the odds. You're not morally obligated to quit too, nobody would expect the coworkers to quit. @ OP: Your boss is an ass. Report him.

#16- but it wasn't HER that morally forced them. The pregnant girl had only one option- give up work. So any 'forcing' morally was the boss's fault, not hers.

Sorry, I disagree. As soon as she learned they were going to quit, she should have told them that she really appreciates it, but that the loss of their jobs is not worth it. I admire these people for standing up against disciminatory behavior, that was really, really brave. But all because the OP did not stand up for herself, defend herself, sue that boss, whatever. She would have lost her job eventually, there was nothing to lose. I would feel ashamed.

They did not tell me that they were quitting. I was informed that night. I do not feel ashamed at all.

What an amazing group of co-workers! You wouldn't want to work for a boss like that anyway, but I would report him for what he said to you. Good luck with your baby. Women with your strength GMH.

The fact that you went through with your pregnancy instead of getting an abortion GMH just as much as what your coworkers did for you. I know you must have put up with a lot of crap for it; my brother is 14 years younger than me and I know that teen girls get dirty looks if they're seen holding a baby that looks like them. Thank you for doing what you did despite all of that.

Totally illegal. I am an employer and anti-discrimination practices are high-priority to HR. If you're in the state of CA, file a complaint; otherwise, get an attorney specializing in labor law. If your employer used a grey-area loophole by classifying you as an independent contractor or paid you under the table, the law still protects you under misclassification of an employee. Consulting with an attorney won't hurt, and there are many that offer free consultation, but you need to do it soon.
