I woke up one morning to hear the birds outside my window and my mother cooking breakfast downstairs. I've never cried so much in my entire life. I had been deaf since the age of 8.

For the people who say its not possible - I do know someone who was born deaf and gained hearing later. I don't know how old he was when he began to hear, but my boyfriend's younger brother when born, was deaf, after a few years (I think), he somehow gained it. Too bad about the first posting - these should be listed in reverse order, especially when someone has the audacity to comment in such a negative manner. Ditto to the "deafness is a gift" mentality. I work with children and adults who use cochlear implants to hear. It truly is inspirational to work with these people and not one has ever said "take this away I hate hearing". Children who are born deaf can hear their parents say "I love you" and learn to sing, and adults can hear all kinds of things that we take for granted every day. Learning to listen with a CI requires practice and patience - but the results are truly a miracle.

"Ditto to the 'deafness is a gift' mentality." How dare you decide Deafness is a handicap that impairs and limits people. Deaf people are whole, complete people. And how dare you say that people who say their Deafness is a gift are wrong. And you say *other people* are negative. I come from a Deaf family and we have RICH culture, our own LANGUAGE, and our own POETRY. The language of the Deaf *literally dances*. You say Deaf people wouldn't be able to "hear" I love you. They can see it in a beautiful, complex language that is movement and art. They see their name the same as you hear it. How dare you dub your language superior. As to the Original Poster, they have every right to get a cochlear implant -- IF THEY CHOOSE. And wow, congratulations for them in making that choice for themself and rejoicing in it. But you must not criticize other people if they choose to rejoice in their Deafness. That is against the spirit of this community, at the very least, and dismissive of them as beautiful people as well!

God is amazing. Miracles happen all the time. To you cynics who say this is impossible, while that may be true, miracles HAVE happened, and been legally recorded. Nothing is impossible with God!

I have had some deaf friends that have woke up hearing, sometimes its a defect or sometimes its that your ear somehow never managed to develope right, or the fact that your hairs inside your cochlear all of the sudden work. I wonder if perhaps you had a cochlear? but most of us with cochlears do not sleep with them. I grew up deaf and got my cochlear a few years ago. I love when i hear new sounds my mom bawled as we left the doctors the day i got "TUrned on" hearing things ive never heard before i kept asking for weeks whats this whats that. eharing blinkers sirens cars and even ran from the sound of the toilet flushing because it seemed so loud. There is hope, but you know what i stopped wearing it. My hearing is not everything when i have my hands. I can talk yes but who am i? I am a person that signs to speak because it makes sense to me and it feels beautiful.. wow this is a long comment

On my 15th birthday, i was in a bad car accident. I had part of my optic nerve severed and went blind. Doctors said i would not see again. I woke up on my 18th birthday, 3 years to the day after the accident, sat up in bed, and saw my girlfriend standing there (i knew it was her because we have been together since before my accident). My doctors don't know how, but my optic nerves healed themselves and i have 20/20 vision out of both eyes now. Miracles happen and there are medical mysteries. Who cares how to OP was able to hear, the point is that they can hear now and have their life back.

Answering your questons: Its a miracle from God. to those that say there are no miracles, my father has had 4 heart attacks. the last one killed him. 12 seconds after being pronounced dead, his heart started beating and is now alive.

That's great! I'm so happy for you! It must be great to be able to hear! Also, to those people who aren't exposed to Deaf culture, there's nothing wrong with being Deaf. It is not a handicap, and while being able to hear is amazing, deafness will not ruin your life. It will put up obstacles, but really, being Deaf is a great thing. Truthfully, if I had a chance to become hearing, I would not take it. However, I'm happy for you, OP! If you truly prefer being hearing, then no haters should go on here, because this is inspiration to not give up.
