I woke up one morning to hear the birds outside my window and my mother cooking breakfast downstairs. I've never cried so much in my entire life. I had been deaf since the age of 8.

*** Random LGMH Story ***
Three years ago, my friend was rushed to the ER due to abuse from her parents.
My brother, who didn't even really know her, still took the first flight there with an armful of candy and things for entertainment. She burst into tears. He was the only person who bothered to visit.
This spring, I will be the best man at their wedding. His love GMH

"congratulations" just doesn't seem like enough to say...
why would you assume it's not true???:(
that's amazing.
and can people please be cynics somewhere else?
like fmylife.
i love that website.
but this is not it.
please.
omg that must have been a wonderful experience, and as much as it saddens me that there are hater out there, we should just ignore them
That is SOOOOO awesome, sweet, and, wow...I need a thesaurus; there just aren't words big enough to discribe it. I wonder what happened when everyone knew you could hear them...so sweet.... So far, this is my FAVOURITE on this site. Wow, I'm not British, but I love putting the "U" in "FAVOURITE!"
"U" in "FAVOURITE!"... lol, this is one of my favorites too :)
This is great. Really, people should read GMH more often? I agree with number 5. This is truly a blessing, and though I have no idea who you are, I'm happy for you. Congratulations.
"A cochlear implant (CI) is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing." - there IS always hope.
Wow, I hope that is true. But... how did you know what you were hearing was birds? Or did you find out later?
He said he turned deaf at 8, so he hasn't been deaf all his life, which means he's probably already familiar with everyday sounds, such as birds chirping.
you should make a song and share it with the world.
that is my favorite story on this site so far. i wonder what ur family did! that must have been the most amazing feeling in the world!
Just out of curiosity, was it in fact a cochlear implant? If not, how did the docs explain it? I'm not being a cynic, but I'm in the medical field and I've never heard of spontaneously regaining one's hearing... I'd like to know (I'm always looking for more things to learn about) :o)
Most deaf folks I know would prefer not to regain their hearing because it has become a big part of who they are, but now you can enjoy the lovely patter of rain, the sound of laughter, people saying "I love you" and of course music :-)
i almost started crying when i read this. congratulations so much! i really am very happy for you and i hope that you live a great life.
Wow, that is one of the most amazing things I'm sure I'll ever hear in my life :) Simply amazing!
What a wonderful day that would have been for you!!
Have a good life xx
i dont care if this is real or not. im going to assume it is real because ive always been a glass half full kind of person. having said that,
this is incredibleeeeeeeeeeeee & im so happy for you (:
This is WONDERFUL! And cynics, go somewhere else, we don't want to hear it on here. :)
Wow. This is incredible...I don't even know what to say.
Wonderful :) I nearly started crying when I read it
I *did* start crying, I feel like I take for granted how much I have, I always complain about the sound of the birds, but thinking about it I would feel so empty if I couldn't hear the rain beating down on the roof or my music :-(
Wow i cried when I read this i am so happy for you and congratulations, now go enjoy the world and all the beautiful sounds it has to offer
Wow, that's amazing! I'm so happy for you! =]
this is great
"you should make a song and share it with the world." --dee9
thats cute
For the people who say its not possible - I do know someone who was born deaf and gained hearing later. I don't know how old he was when he began to hear, but my boyfriend's younger brother when born, was deaf, after a few years (I think), he somehow gained it. He now is a normal teenager, with good hearing.
That is absolutely wonderful and amazing!
I just really wanna know how that's possible. Not saying that's true, but I'm curious.
OH MY GOSH
that is possible. maybe something happened to her the past night
That's beautiful! Congratulations, dear!
All that I can say is congratulations.
That happened to my friend's dad. I think he had the implant but he could hear birds singing for the first time in decades and he cried too.
I heard of a man who was blinded by some electrical accident, then 10 years later he out of nowhere regained his ability to see. I believe in miracles.
I believe that this person did just somehow grow out of their deafness. Or they didn't mean it literally when they said they heard that stuff. Either way, it's wonderful. This is my favorite website.
This is a beautiful story. I don't even know what to say. It's things like hearing, sight etc that we take for granted. Congratulations MattB, you're living proof that miracles can happen =D
This is wonderful. Absoultley wonderful. I am so happy for you!
awh YAAY =D
this is beautiful,i cried when i read what you wrote
I'm happy for you.
x
I really hope this is true. It made me smile :)
that's amazing. The sense of hearing is way better than any other. Who doesn't love music?
I cried so suddenly when I read this... Appreciate not only your ability to hear but every sense you have every day to God, and just WOW. God bless you, MattB, you gave me hope.
Beautiful, I decided to share it with my best friend over a bebo comment who a few months back took his own life. I thought even angel's might want to hear it considering they help give us hope. Congratulations.
Oh my Gryffindor! Gaby Montero laughed at what I said!
#11 nothing in the world is impossible.
i agree with #4. do that somewhere else.
excuse me #1 comment... all of us learned this in kindergarten, "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all" you don't know what is bs and what is not. how would you know if this is real or not?
This is my No.1 favorite post! God bless your wonderful moment and thank you so much for sharing such a lovely story. You gave me goosebumps...and of course, hope :)
HEY i'm so happy for you! :D
So happy for you :) And as for all the cynics, just let there be some happiness! How do you know that it isnt true!?! But yeahh, thats so sweet and now get out there and enjoy it all :)
aww, thats amazing! congrats(:
Absolutely beautiful. I'm so happy for you!
I cried my eyes out. That is the most beautiful thing I have ever read in my entire life. See, miracles DO happen!
This is one of the most amazing things I've erad. I'm sitting here in tears and trying to imagine what it must have felt like. I am so happy for you and words cannot express what you must have felt. Live, Life, Love!
With God (and Fred and George Weasley, according to Ginny), nothing's impossible.
Your story is amazing and inspiring. No matter how rough your life is, there's always a turning point for change. Good to know.
You're a beautiful, inspiring person. :)
This is wonderful. I am at a loss for better words. It's just - beautiful. =]
That is amazing. I'm about to cry just from hearing that. Congratulations doesn't seem to be enough to say. You have given me hope. Thank you.
Miracles can and do happen, and this one is amazing.
You've really given me hope. Thank you.
That is absoliutely incredible. Congratulations, I am so happy for you. :)
Congratulations! and anyone who thinks this is fake (because I'm hoping it's not) can just go to fml with their negativity. this website is for inspiration and hope not negativity. So just ignore them and go explore with your new found hearing!
omg my fav of all
that would b such a miracle
That's great!!! Go listen to music!!
Just out of curiosity, was it in fact a cochlear implant? If not, how did the docs explain it? I'm not being a cynic, but I'm in the medical field and I've never heard of spontaneously regaining one's hearing... I'd like to know (I'm always looking for more things to learn about) :o)
i have to say, i think its possible that his parents put in that cohlear implant thing when he was asleep?
reminds me of a truelife i saw where the boy gets a implant after being deaf his whole life. When he heard his mother say his name his face lit up and it was enough to make me cry. Your story and his GMH :)
Yeah I agree with #13, if the OP was always deaf, how did he know what he was listening to? :O
That's amazing. Now you get to here the beautiful sound of music (:
This GMH made my day.
How is it possible?
I answer with the qusetion: "How great is our God?"
:D
I too am I lucky person who's been healed, I know your joy :D
Oh wow, this makes my stomach do flip flops. I do believe this and just don't listen to the people who don't.
What a blessing, honestly, that is a miracle.
80, he would because he was deaf at 8, not his whole life.
I can't stop reading this!
That's amazing! I'm so happy for you!
This is something that only Jesus could do. [Matthew 10:20:34]
Amazing! I understand it is hard to believe for some, but agree with others that this is not the place to doubt or at least don't write it. I love the kindergarden phrase. Good lesson. Need to remember it.
Maybe you guys just need to broaden your horizons!? I recommend to watch "The secret' and read Louise Hay's You can heal your life - that explains a lot!!!!
And for you! Congratulations! Who cares if some people don't believe you - you can hear again!!!!! so much more important! Enjoy and keep giving hope to others!
Love
Whomever said "God is great" is the most correct person here. Even if it was a Coclear Implant, its still a miracle. GOD IS GREAT!!!
this story GMH. =) i'm really happy for you ^.^
&& to all the cynics out there; it is not scientifically proven that hearing cannot come back once its lost - at most that's a theory - it's only proven true ONCE scientists have gone through EVERY single deaf person in the world and watched them over their period of life to see if hearing returns - and since not one person can do that - the statement that hearing cannot return is still a theory ^.^ Learn your basic science terms before you use it.
he probably got a cochlear implant and then he woke up to it working?
if this is true congratulations. ive been blessed in a similar, yet not as miraculous way: when i was 2 ive not been able to hear all that well and had a speech impediment called "cluttering", meaning i add syllables to the end of words and i couldnt pronounce most words. after years of speech therapy my teachers have commented on my public speaking skills.
I am so happy for you! That's just wonderful! I just don't know what to say! It's amazing!
I've commented on this a bit too much....
how we take the little things for granted (:
That's wonderful! good for you (y) This kind of things makes us see what we have!
wow, i guess everyone takes it for granted. All our senses.
So well done and enjoy!
I'm so happy for you! I agree with mikael25...
thats amazing!! congrats!!
Whether this is true or not is irrelevant. If it makes the reader feel happy, then it accomplished what it was posted to do -- give us hope.
If they're expecting us to believe that it came back spontaneously, then I may have lost a small bit of the faith I'd previously gained here, both in the expectation and the apparency that some actually bought it. If it was a cochlear implant or something similar than that's fantastic and congratulations!
That's great then. Congratulations. :)
This is truly AMAZING. This is the definition of GMH!! Pesomists who don't think this is true shouldnt be commenting and bringing the mood down.
Too bad about the first posting - these should be listed in reverse order, especially when someone has the audacity to comment in such a negative manner. Ditto to the "deafness is a gift" mentality. I work with children and adults who use cochlear implants to hear. It truly is inspirational to work with these people and not one has ever said "take this away I hate hearing". Children who are born deaf can hear their parents say "I love you" and learn to sing, and adults can hear all kinds of things that we take for granted every day. Learning to listen with a CI requires practice and patience - but the results are truly a miracle.
Amazing. have a great life.
This is amazing.
As for the cynics out there - miracles do exist. How else could you explain the people that survive for years when they are told that they only have weeks to live?
This is like, one of the sweetest things ever
omg when i read this i almoast cried thats so amazing
Isn't it easy to see why this is number one?
I can't believe there are people on this site who question. Questioning things inspired to give hope is basically reversing it's role. I will believe this, through and through. It's also a beautiful one.
i dont care how it happened but its amazing. My God really does work miracles. You GMH
That really GMH!!!! And I agree with Rose Weasely, t00tsiep0pg1rl, and # 108
Dear cynics and trashtalkers,
... The sites called gives me hope... so get some and stop crushing other peoples.
How did you know that you were hearing birds, and how did you know that your mother was making breakfast downstairs if you had never heard those sounds before? Nice story and all but...
"Ditto to the 'deafness is a gift' mentality." How dare you decide Deafness is a handicap that impairs and limits people. Deaf people are whole, complete people. And how dare you say that people who say their Deafness is a gift are wrong. And you say *other people* are negative. I come from a Deaf family and we have RICH culture, our own LANGUAGE, and our own POETRY. The language of the Deaf *literally dances*. You say Deaf people wouldn't be able to "hear" I love you. They can see it in a beautiful, complex language that is movement and art. They see their name the same as you hear it. How dare you dub your language superior. As to the Original Poster, they have every right to get a cochlear implant -- IF THEY CHOOSE. And wow, congratulations for them in making that choice for themself and rejoicing in it. But you must not criticize other people if they choose to rejoice in their Deafness. That is against the spirit of this community, at the very least, and dismissive of them as beautiful people as well!
#124, the person knew the sounds because they became deaf when they were EIGHT.
Never say never haters!! everything and everything is possible, and this is awesome...amazing...every good word haha!!!!!!!!! I'm so happy for you!!!
This is a beautiful story.
How amazing! I can't even imagine how that must feel. It gives me hope and I don't care about that cynic up there. I'm a Cynic and I know that it is almost a comfort to see the dark side of things but it hurts other people and I don't want that.
This was a beautiful experience and I'm not going to ruin it no matter how small. :)
#131, what's you're problem?! even if it is made up, IDC, alright? Nobody wants to hear you wasting words like that! And if you actually are/were blind, I really am sorry, but honestly, go post that kind of stuff on fmylife or something.
I don't care wether it's true or not, this is fabulous for you.
I think this GMH wins the record for most commented, favourited, and voted.
I showed this to a few people while we were working on laptops today (in English) and they all loved it!
Wow this is probably the first GMH to make me cry!
Thats beautiful! Please listen to me and live your life the fullest!
God Bless.
God is amazing. Miracles happen all the time. To you cynics who say this is impossible, while that may be true, miracles HAVE happened, and been legally recorded. Nothing is impossible with God!
God is good to those who wate I am so happy for you enjoy every moment
I belive in magic!! Miracles happen all the time but experincing magic is a once in a life time chance!! Enjoy your life and nothing can ever go bad in the world, go out and be a kid again enjoy things you've never got to experince and have fun.
amazing. god bless you. :]
This is so amazing, I can't really put it into words. I'm so happy for you. This is my new favourite GMH!
that's amazing! congratulations!
I have had some deaf friends that have woke up hearing, sometimes its a defect or sometimes its that your ear somehow never managed to develope right, or the fact that your hairs inside your cochlear all of the sudden work. I wonder if perhaps you had a cochlear? but most of us with cochlears do not sleep with them. I grew up deaf and got my cochlear a few years ago. I love when i hear new sounds my mom bawled as we left the doctors the day i got "TUrned on" hearing things ive never heard before i kept asking for weeks whats this whats that. eharing blinkers sirens cars and even ran from the sound of the toilet flushing because it seemed so loud. There is hope, but you know what i stopped wearing it. My hearing is not everything when i have my hands. I can talk yes but who am i? I am a person that signs to speak because it makes sense to me and it feels beautiful.. wow this is a long comment
I'm a 23 year old dude, and when I read this short little gmh, a tear rolled down my cheek.
On my 15th birthday, i was in a bad car accident. I had part of my optic nerve severed and went blind. Doctors said i would not see again. I woke up on my 18th birthday, 3 years to the day after the accident, sat up in bed, and saw my girlfriend standing there (i knew it was her because we have been together since before my accident).
My doctors don't know how, but my optic nerves healed themselves and i have 20/20 vision out of both eyes now. Miracles happen and there are medical mysteries.
Who cares how to OP was able to hear, the point is that they can hear now and have their life back.
Wow, it took me a second to figure out that comments had been erased. I was wondering why everyone was yelling at #1 when the current #1 is a positive comment. :P As for the story, beautiful. Stories of healing like this always make me want to cry.
Who else agrees with #14 (dee9)? #144 (jeuilerbaucker), your story is just as inspiring!
this is amazing! God bless you!!
OH my gosh, a comment was deleted and I had the 100th comment! Easily my greatest accomplishment this week.
I'm so happy for you! You're story made my day!
wow congratulations. I am so happy for you!
omg I'm so happy you made my day.... make popcorn and listen to the sound of the pops. go to the beach and listen to the waves. go to a playground and listen to the kids play. it's amazing how much one sound make a difference in your life.
I think it's not true unless the user had gone through some surgery or transplant.
that is amazing , you made my day :) congrats !!!
This gave me hope until I read these dreadful comments. Wether this is true or not has not imprtance in the matter. This is GMH, not FML.
Oh my goodness that is a miracle, congratulations!!!
when I started reading this I was wondering where the story was going n after finishing it I was in tears! I'm so happy for you!
Answering your questons: Its a miracle from God. to those that say there are no miracles, my father has had 4 heart attacks. the last one killed him. 12 seconds after being pronounced dead, his heart started beating and is now alive.
I read this during my free period at school with 3 of my best friends in the library. We read it outloud and we all started crying. Congratulations!
that is so amazing and wonderful!!!
one of my best friends is deaf with a coclier implant and i see all of the strugles that he goes through and to find out that he could hear again would be amazing. congradulations!!!
I have to stand up for the first commenter here! He/she meant that congratulations was not enough because the fact that this person's hearing was restored is so remarkable. Nowhere does it say that the commenter thinks it's fake. Don't attack people before you learn to read, PLEASE.
that is just wow... nothing can describe how wonderful you must have felt.
Has anyone who's religious stopped to think it could be an act of god??? if your aetheist I could understand but Christian catholic etc I don't get it...goodness people. an someone said stop hating? how are they hating, unless they are deaf themselves!
I almost start crying in happyness for you! have a great life and by the way somethimes being deaf isn't that bad you don't have to get yelled at by people cause you can't hear them
that must have been the best day of ur life
It is possible that he/she hit his/her head, became deaf and later could hear because the damage done to the section of the brain that processes sound had healed.
wow man that made me smile. congradulations. :D
That's the power of God. With that said, anything is possible my friends! Congrats! I wish you the best in life.
omg!! that's amazing, only God could be the creator of that
oh wow, this is truely incredible. :]
this is wonderful! I am also glad the many negative posts referred to by other comments are deleted. This is a place to feel good, not get trodden down.
I totally believe you. I have a friend who had a terrable vision and then by a mirracle just could see. Now she doesn't need to wear glasses or contacts anymore. I just have two things to say! congratulations and Jesus is great!
it's not fun being deaf at all sorry that happened to you
Wow this is by far my favorite on GMH :) that sounds amazing.
there arent enough words in the world that could desrcibe how much this GMH.
that is amazing. i need a better word.
It seems like "congratulations" just isn't enough to say how happy I am for u.
this is my absolute favorite GMH. It proves that miracles really do happen. :) congratulations doesn't seem like enough to say...
that is so amazing, im just soo happy for you!!
I wish i could say something better, but i dont know what to say !!
just congratulations i guess
Absolutley amazing. I saw this app on my iPod wen I was reading FML. I now truly believe there is more good than bad in the world. I deleted FML in a second. I cried all night reading. Enjoy ur life of hearing. IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING
congratulations, thats wonderful !
that's AMAZING! the Lord really blessed you!! this is my favorite by far!! wow!!! hope all is well!! ;)
aww! you brightened up my day! hope you have a nice one yourself
i love this 1 made me cry x
I cried when I read this. there is hope for everyone. thank you for sharing this and you GMH
That's great! I'm so happy for you! It must be great to be able to hear!
Also, to those people who aren't exposed to Deaf culture, there's nothing wrong with being Deaf. It is not a handicap, and while being able to hear is amazing, deafness will not ruin your life. It will put up obstacles, but really, being Deaf is a great thing. Truthfully, if I had a chance to become hearing, I would not take it.
However, I'm happy for you, OP! If you truly prefer being hearing, then no haters should go on here, because this is inspiration to not give up.
Its a miracle..we shud thnk him up there =]. I'm happy for you.
Is it possible to recover from being deaf?
i get chills everytime i read this
excuse me the person who left the last comment *why don u get re he'll out of here and post ur life on FML ok jeez just get a life nobody needs ur BS!
Oh wow.. This made me tear up. I'm so happy for you!
the guy that said nothing was impossible...obviously hasn't tryed slamming a revolving door.
BIGGEST smile i've had all day :) CONGRATULATIONS!
that's absolutly amazing, I'm so happy for you. that's one of the sweetest stories I've ever heard
That is so wonderful! This made me so happy to hear:)
Anything is possible. One of the most amazing story!. =)
Ama-ZING!!! Ah, Rose Weasley, you rock. Your name, your comments...everything. Oh my Gryffindor...I'll have to use that. :) you too, ravenclaw rebel and hermione granger, just because of your names. :D
Miracles really do happen :]

Bleh! how do I put this in my Favorites??????
This seriously had me crying. That must have been the most amazing experience.
i litterally started crying when i read this, and i still start crying when i think about it.
words dont express what i want to say to you right now.
i cant imagine what that would be like... im so happy for you
That's wonderful. But you know-- I was born deaf and I could never hear anything. Hope you're well with your life. :]
