My Grandma was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 1999 and had to live in a nursing home. My Grandpa would come and visit her twice a day for four years. While he was there, Grandpa would go and visit many of the other lonely residents. Grandma passed away in 2003, but Grandpa still goes to visit those residents every week. His love for others GMH.
Awwwwwwww. But, I know three people with Alzheimers (that I just learned how to spell), two of whom are related to me, but they still live in houses.
Funny enough, Rose, Alzheimers progresses. Someone who was recently diagnosed with early dementia can often live on their own, ect. but when the dementia progresses, most (if not all) are unable to live without help. This may be in a nursing home, with family, or with a live-in nurse or aid. Just because the people you know can still live in houses, doesn't mean the OPs grandmother could. My own step-grandma has to live with family who care for her 24/7 because she has moderate dementia. She doesn't even know who I am most days. Just go to the Alzheimers ward of any nursing home, and you'll see what moderate and severe dementia does to an individual. Working in a mental hospital I have seen severe dementia first hand, and it's very sad. Very very sad.
OP - Your grandfather is one of the sweetest men I've read about here. I'm sure these residents love having company! You should hug him for us :)
