The Polish army officially drafted a brown bear into service in WWII as a Private!

Wojtek was a Syrian brown bear, and he was a private in the Polish army during World War II. His official duty was passing ammunition along to supply the guns. However, in between raids, Wojtek enjoyed drinking beer, eating cigarettes and wrestling with the men of 22nd Artillery Supply Company. Once, he even found an enemy soldier who was spying for a raiding party.
A local Iranian boy found Wojtek when he was less than a year old, and sold it to the nearby Polish Army. Before too long, he could properly salute when greeted and enjoyed the friendliness of all the men.
He was like a big dog that was everyone’s favorite pet. When the Company was deployed to Italy, the only way to take Wojtek on the ship was to officially enlist him. He was given a name, rank and number. Wojtek survived the war and lived until he was 22 at the Edinburgh Zoo.

John Stewart of the Daily show proposed to his wife with a custom crossword puzzle!

John Stewart of The Daily Show proposed to his wife with a custom crossword puzzle designed with the help of Will Shortz, the crossword puzzle editor of the New York Times. In 2000 Stewart met Tracy McShane on a blind date set up by a coworker.

Four years later, Stewart was scribbling away at crossword puzzles to seal the deal. Before they were even married, Stewart and his girlfriend filed for a joint name change to both legally become Stewart. Previously, Stewart’s legal name had been Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz.

The Stuarts have two children, and own a cat and two pit bull terriers. One of the pit bull terriers is named after Art Shamsky, the former New York Mets baseball player.

Chainsaws were originally designed to deliver babies!

The 18th Century prototype for the chainsaw was used as a surgical tool for dissecting limbs and symphysiotomy. Symphysiotomy is a surgical operation in which cartilage is cut out of the pubis in order to widen the pelvis and allow the baby to pass through.

Scottish doctors John Aitken and James Jeffray invented the prototype around 1783-1785. This chain hand saw was particularly used for the removal of diseased knees and elbows. The chain saw was still in use for much of the 19th Century until the Gigli twisted wire saw replaced it.
