During WWII, my friend's grandpa was captured and tortured, but he refused to reveal his mission. The japanese said if he didn't spill, they would kill the other five captured men. He wouldn't budge. He escaped, but he had to live with their blood on his hands. 25 years later, he found out they all lived. Not a single one talked. GMH

Yesterday I turned my calculator on to do my math homework and "I love you" was written on the screen. My boyfriend said "I wrote it last Sunday and I've been waiting all week for you to turn it on." He knows I'm struggling with precalc and he can't help me, but his love and support make me want to do my best. It GMH.

Today, my boyfriend told me that before we'd met, he had been a hardcore drug user and dealer for years, as well as a heavy drinker. When I asked why he stopped, he was silent before saying, "I wanted you to have better than that." Here's to my cupcake, 17 months clean. Derrick GMH.

A few months ago, I was at dinner with friends, and we ended up having an emotional talk (mostly about my self-esteem issues) and I cried for about half of dinner. When I got the receipt, the stunning waitress had written something across the top: "You're even beautiful when you cry." GMH

A boy was dying of cancer and needed an expensive brain surgery, but his family, broke and desperate, couldn't afford it. His 8 yr old took sister Tess took her piggy bank savings to a pharmacist in order to buy a 'miracle'. it just so happens that the right man witnessed the little girl's tears at the pharmacy counter: a neurosurgeon. He performed the surgery for free.

Today I found out about a 10-year-old boy who has been harrassed by his classmates because he refuses to say the Pledge of Allegiance. Why? He says that until gays and lesbians have equal rights, there isn't really "liberty and justice for all". Kids with the courage to stand up for their fellow human beings GMH.

My family & I got seperated in New York City when I was little. Scared, I sat crying on the sidewalk as tons of people passed by. A homeless man picked me up, comforted me, & carried me to a police officer, who found my parents. He had a long beard & I asked if he was Jesus. He laughed so hard he cried. He GMH.

Yesterday, I missed the bus to school, so my Muslim Afghani mother dropped me off with her headscarf on. I was scared about what the other kids would think when they saw her, but instead they bombarded me with questions about Islam and seemed fascinated to learn about another culture/religion. Their religious tolerance GMH!

I'm 16 and am about to have a baby. I work a minimum wage job with about 15 other people who are just barely making it. My boss told me that me being pregnant was making him look bad and that I need to quit. I did. So did everyone else working there.

When my mom was dying of cancer, my dad had to keep working to keep his health insurance. His midsize company has a program by which employees can transfer paid time off to one another. A person in HR sent out an email explaining his situation. Within 3 hours, my father had 12 weeks of paid vacation. Strangers' sacrifices GMH.

This spring, I helped out at my school's prom, monitoring the voting for prom queen and king. When the winners were announced, they came as no surprise. A very popular girl, and Shane, who had been surrounded by the prettiest girls all night. Oh, but Shane? He has Down Syndrome. My generation GMH.

I have a little sister who suffers from mental retardation. My mother told her I was gay and that "gay people don't go to heaven'. My sister started sobbing saying, "It wouldn't be heaven if Paloma wasn't there." My sister's unconditional love GMH.

Last week, a very hateful group announced that would be protesting outside my college's center for Jewish life. They planned to carry hateful signs and to jeer at Jewish students. When they arrived, they were met by 1,000 students and professors standing in the rain, and left quickly because they could not be heard over the songs of love. It GMH

I was reading about a little kid whose mom told him the key to life was happiness. When he was in school the teacher asked them to write down what they wanted to be when they grew up. He said happy. They said he didn't understand the assignment. He said they didn't understand life. My generation GMH

I was selling shoes, and a young woman in a long skirt brought me pair of sandals she wanted to try. When I came back she was timidly sitting on a bench with her knees against her chest. From the knees down she had been burnt. She said she was finally brave enough to buy sandals and tired of being self conscious. She bought bright red sandals. She GMH

My brother has Down Syndrome and doesn't speak very well. This week while we were down the beach he tried to learn how to skim board. He would try and ask the other boys how they did it and they would laugh at him and walk away. The last day 4 teenage boys spent hours with him teaching him. They were so patient. He wouldn't stop smiling :)They GMH.

My father was diagnosed with cancer and passed away 4 years ago. Recently, I stopped by his online blog. I found out my son had been leaving him comments, saying things like how he missed him, and how he is studying hard in school, and that he would study hard to find a cure to cancer so that people wont miss their grandfather like he does. Today, my little cousin cut 8 inches off her hair and donated it to a foundation dedicated to girls with cancer to make wigs. She wasn't really happy about her new haircut so I told her I thought it looked beautiful. She replied "At least someone else will feel pretty, so that makes me feel beautiful on the inside". She's only 8. Kids like that GMH

In my junior year of high school, everybody bought yearbooks and spent all day in classes signing them. A girl asked me if I would sign hers, and I did. She asked to sign mine, but I said I couldn't afford one. She disappeared from the classroom, and she came back with a yearbook filled with signatures from the office staff as well as hers. GMH

Exactly twelve years ago, I was diagnosed with leukemia. I spent two and a half years on chemo and lost my hair twice. Now I'm a college student. I dance, I sing, I'm falling head over heels for a guy who truly loves me, and I've donated my own hair to make wigs for others. Three times. GMH.

I'm Jewish, so around the holidays, I feel a little left out, and I was always jealous of my friends decorating their houses and Christmas trees. My friend's mom found out I had never decorated a Christmas tree, so she let me decorate a tree in their yard and called it my Hanukkah Bush, and left it up for weeks. Loving friends and their moms GMH

(
Gaby and Emerson are the founders of GMH.)

Here's what happened: Emerson told me he 'pulled strings' and I was going to get to do a contest to win a prize during one of the TV time outs. I was told Benny the Bull (the mascot) would be standing somewhere on the court and I had to find him in 30 seconds. I was blindfolded and spun around, and the crowd shouted Hot or Cold to direct me. But I didn't find Benny... :) (Here is another view.)

This is a video my friend took from up in the press box - Emerson got tickets for all of our closest friends!!
