I woke up one morning to hear the birds outside my window and my mother cooking breakfast downstairs. I've never cried so much in my entire life. I had been deaf since the age of 8.

Today, my aunt dragged me along to the mall to go shopping. While in the store, she critisized me, calling me fat and comparing me to 'Ugly Betty'. When I walked out of the store, a boy held the door open and whispered 'I don't know what she's talking about'. GMH.

I was reading about a little kid whose mom told him the key to life was happiness. When he was in school the teacher asked them to write down what they wanted to be when they grew up. He said happy. They said he didn't understand the assignment. He said they didn't understand life. My generation GMH

Yesterday whilst on the phone with my cousin she decided at random to say the words "God won't take me". She suffers from a severe condition of leukemia and has pretty much been told death is inevitable. For her to be able to say those words GMH.

A little girl was dying of cancer and her younger brother had a match for the bone marrow she needed. The doctors told him it was a matter of life and death. After he had the surgery, he asked the doctors how long he had to live. He thought if he gave his bone marrow to let his sister live he would die but he did it anyway. GMH

I was recently working at a nursery school where I saw a 3 year old girl wearing tights on her head. One of my colleagues told me it was because some of the children had been making fun of her bald head. She had had chemotherapy. I later saw one young boy of about 4 go over to her, tell her she was beautiful and remove the tights. GMH x

Freshman year, there was a crippled girl bound to a wheelchair. For 4 years, she did physical therapy and progressed to crutches. When we graduated a few weeks ago, she handed her crutches to an officer and walked across the entire stage. The applause from the seniors was deafening. She cried the whole way. GMH

Ten years ago, my friend made an enemy. They didn't click at all and I think my friend really hurt that person. Flash forward. My friend is broke w/ kids, & after getting into huge trouble, really needed a lawyer and was referred to one. The lawyer was her old enemy & she took the case. For free.

I work in a childcare center and, while telling the children what to play with, a teacher inadvertently knocked over a young girl's blocks. A boy from across the room yelled "HEY!" and he ran over to where the teacher and the girl where. He started setting her blocks back up for her. His care GMH.

I had surgery on my growth plate in 6th grade. After, I was in the hospital room, in pain and feeling sorry for myself. When I looked out my window to the other hospital rooms across the courtyard, I saw a bald, smiling and bubbly toddler wave up at me, and I waved back, happier. He had cancer and was only 4, but his smile and spirit still GMH.

On September 12, 2001, I stood in line at a blood bank to help the NYC victims. I stood all day next to a Muslim cab driver from Ethiopia who went the whole day without earning any fares to give something back to the country that had given him so much. His courage, patriotism, and kindness GMH.

When I was 10 I broke my arm, and while the doctor was taking off my cast I saw, in the next room, a girl who looked two or three years older than me take three steps and fall into her mother's arms and they both started crying. The doctor looked at me and said "You just watched her first steps. We thought she'd never walk." GMH

Last weekend I volunteered for a banquet. I was o to show up in the morning and prepare food. When I got there there was a young woman peeling onions. I watched her as she proceeded to chop them, tears streaming down her face. Turns out, she wasn't signed up. A 14yo peeled 8lbs of onions because she was walking by the hall on a Saturday. She GMH

A man was buying flowers from us in the hospital when he suddenly walked back to the cooler and grabbed another vase of flowers. He took the tag off, and then took the flowers to an elderly lady slumped over in her wheel chair with her nurse. He'd never met her before. I've never seen someone go from looking so sad to having such a big smile... He GMH.

Last week, I was at the airport when I saw a group of soldiers in uniform. A little 4ish-year-old girl saw them, too. She walked away from her family, towards the soldiers, stood up straight, and saluted them. At least 20 shocked people stared while she walked back to her family, completely unfazed. GMH

My cousin sent me 10 frantic messages on AIM today when I was away. What was she worried about? The Hunger Site (www.thehungersite.com) wasn't loading on her slower than average internet and she was worried that she couldn't click like she does every single day to give 1.1 cups of food to a needy person. Her selflessness at 9 years old GMH.

I was at an electronics store when I saw an employee playing Mario Kart with a little boy. They were sharing a single controller, working together to play the game. The boy had only one arm and wouldn't have been able to play the game otherwise. The boy's smile was a mile wide. Those two GMH.

2 boys at my church adopted a child from Africa, and told their mom that they wanted to give her all their allowance for the rest of the year. Then, they went home and began stuffing toys in bags, giving most of what they had to their mom and asking her to send it to their orphan friend. They GMH.

I worked with a kid at a summer camp. The last day of camp, our director let's us know that he is homeless again. We had a lot of extra toys, and the director let the child pick out 4 games he wanted. He picked 3, saying 'some kid deserves this more than me.' GMH.
