Last summer I was working as an assistant wedding photographer in California during the brief period when gay couples could marry there. While working a wedding at the San Fransisco City Hall, I watched two old men in tuxedos help each other up the stairs in order to finally get married after over 30 years together. GMH.

I was at a bookstore and an obscure author was doing a book signing. Nobody was coming over--he looked dejected. Then three teenagers came over, got his autograph & took pictures with him. It looked like it made his day. Later, I talked to them and they said they had never read his books. GMH

Once a desheviled woman approached by father and asked him if he would like to buy a $20 bouquet of long stemmed roses. He politely declined, started to drive away, then changed his mind. He rolled down the window and told the woman he would take some roses. After he paid, he handed the roses back to the woman and said "These are for you." He GMH.

At school, I was often picked on for being different. During one class, the teacher asked people to say what they liked about their fellow class-mates. One girl I barely even knew stood up and said she admired my individuality and courage to be myself. To this day it GMH.

My husband's boss overhead us talking about how much we wanted to take a honeymoon, but would NEVER be able to afford it. He had his travel agent arrange a 7 night cruise to 3 countries, and paid for it in full. It was the best week of our lives. His generosity GMH.

My family and I disowned my sister for her years of her drugs and alcohol abuse. I found out she was in a homeless shelter so I picked her up and took her in. She has been sober for a year, and helps my brother every day with his baby because his wife is terminally ill with cancer. Now, she is the one holding the family together. GMH

Ten years ago, my friend made an enemy. They didn't click at all and I think my friend really hurt that person. Flash forward. My friend is broke w/ kids, & after getting into huge trouble, really needed a lawyer and was referred to one. The lawyer was her old enemy & she took the case. For free.

Today, I was waiting for the elevator to come along with a few "thug-ish" men who were smoking. The elevator reached and just as they were going in, they noticed a baby inside. They walked off the elevator, threw out their cigarettes, and went back in. Their thoughtfulness GMH.

At this restaurant we go to, there is a kid with Downs Syndrome who is a host. He seats everyone that comes in. When there are girls in the party, he escorts them to their table by walking with them holding onto his arms. Seeing him beaming AND the girls unable to control their smiles GMH.

Today, I was walking in a dog park. I reached this really steep hill, and noticed someone rolling down it, laughing the whole way. At first I passed it off as a just a kid. Then I noticed that it was a woman at least 60 years old, and that her husband was waiting at the bottom of the hill to catch her. They GMH

I have a little sister who suffers from mental retardation. My mother told her I was gay and that "gay people don't go to heaven'. My sister started sobbing saying, "It wouldn't be heaven if Paloma wasn't there." My sister's unconditional love GMH.

My friend got HIV at age 6 when she was raped.

She loved to learn, but couldn't continue in school after HS due to her illness. She died during my second year of college.

I found out at a memorial service that our history teacher had gone to her house to read to her every day until she died. GMH.

Today I was walking around in the city when I saw an elderly man who was in a wheelchair being pushed around by a woman I would assume was his daughter. Though he was elderly and disabled, he would still enjoy sitting with his hands at the 10 and 2 o'clock position pretending to be a racecar driver and making car sounds. GMH.

At my college graduation everyone is allowed to take a loved one with them as they walk across the stage. The last girl to walk across held the arm of her 90 year old grandpa. As they crossed the stage the chancelor read her grandfathers name. He graduated 60 years ago but didn't get to walk his own graduation because he was fighting in WWII. GMH.

A few years ago, I was out with my gorgeous best friend, feeling like the most ugly girl in the room. Sensing this, an elderly gentleman won a stuffed animal from the crane machine, comes over and says "a stuffed animal for the prettiest girl in the room." I still feel like it. GMH.

I'm a 17 year old male that has spent the last 4 years working through anorexia. Yesterday, I had a large order of French Toast with eggs and bacon for breakfast, a cheese burger and French fries for lunch, and a steak with mashed potatoes and corn for dinner. I have never felt so attractive. GMH

Exactly 8 months ago my grandpa lost his battle with cancer. By the end he couldn't talk and wouldn't respond to any of us. A few moments before he took his last breath, he looked at my grandma and said clear as day "I love you". They were married 51 years. GMH!!

Around Christmas time, I was at the mall. I saw a four year old girl walking around with her father, a twenty dollar bill to spend in hand. She saw someone collecting for a chartity and put her entire twenty dollars into the bin. When her father asked her why, she answered, "Because these people need it more than me." GMH.

My parents are both terminally ill, and I drive home from college on the weekends to check on them. This weekend I walked in and was worried to hear a crash. Turns out that my 60 year old parents had found the foam swords I'd bought for my nephews and were dueling, giggling hysterically. They GMH.

A few months ago my ultra-conservative family found out that I am gay. My mom called me on the phone telling me that my aunt wanted to talk to me. I sat alone outside ready to begin breaking down as I dialed her number. She answered and said but three words. "I love you." Nothing meant more to me. Her understanding GMH.

The hardest part for me about my daughter being autistic is that she didn't recognize me as her mother. This week we were pointing at things in a book- "where's the cat?" "where's the ball?" and I asked her "where's the mommy?" and she turned around and pointed at me. GMH

I was a single mom waitressing when my daughter had her first seizure. She needed tests and an 80 dollar co-pay I didn't have. I asked my boss to pick up hours and she told me no. An elderly man at my table's dinner cost 17 dollars. He left $100 and a note: "My daughter had seizures, too." GMH

Every year, the graduating 8th grade class votes for superlatives. The teachers add up the votes. When 'Jordan A' was announced for Most Inspirational, teachers were in tears to see our entire class who never get along, give a standing ovation. He died in a fire in fourth grade and we still consider him part of our class.

I suffer from severe depression. I try to keep that part of me away from friends because I'm worried they'll judge me for it. After revealing this to a dear friend via email, he went silent. I went to bed feeling worse than ever. Early the next morning, there was a knock at the door. He had driven all night to see me, just to give me a hug. GMH.

I work in a bank - a place where good news is hard to come by recently: Today I spoke with a gentleman who told me he needed to know how much money he had. When I asked if he had a large purchase coming up, he said yes. "I'm buying clothes for the man who asks me for a quarter every day on my way to school," he replies. This gentleman was 12. GMH

A long time ago, I was on the verge of committing suicide when a guy came to the roof to have lunch. He saw me climbing over the railing and asked me to share his lunch with him. I like to dress up like Marilyn Manson, so this often gets me stares from strangers on the street, and not in the good way.
